Community Outreach

Do you know of someone who needs a ride to church? Please let the Board
of Christian Service know. Call Bill Heren, 348-3531.

This project began in 1976 at Trinity Lutheran Church. At that time we distributed hats, mittens and scarves to needy children at Jefferson School. We have since grown to serve all of Pekin School District 108 and Good Sheperd Lutheran School in donating to the children hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, boots, shoes, coats, and sometimes clothing. In the past few years, The Giving Tree has been a project of the Board of Christian Service. With the help of this group and the donations of others, nearly 275 children are helped each year (263 coats in 2011).

The principals of the Pekin Public Schools are sent a letter telling them of the project. The teachers are given a form and then asked to list items and sizes that are needed by children of needy families. Items including coats, hats, mittens, gloves, boots, shoes, socks and even underwear are requested. The committee does its best to fill these requests and the items are delivered to the children the first week of December.

In late October / early November, the Board of Christian Service puts up the Giving Tree in the room by the parking lot entrance to track donations. Each time $30 is donated, a red coat on the tree will be replaced by a blue cross so we can see how far we have to go to reach our goal for funding this much needed program.
